Bird Outduels Locals for Winged Sprint Win |
![]() POST FALLS, IDAHO – April 23, 2006 – Jeff Bird’s long haul to get to the races paid off Saturday night at Stateline Speedway in Post Falls. The Victoria, B.C. driver dashed to the front in the 20-lap Winged Sprint Car main to take the win as vintage open wheel cars, Early and Hobby stocks took to the track for the first Saturday night race of the season. Bird, a veteran of open wheel sprint and midget racing in Canada, traveled overnight to compete in the Winged Sprint Car opener, blistering a fast lap time of 12.65 seconds in route to his main event win. St. Maries, Idaho driver Kevin Burck, last year’s leading main event winner, finished second in the event after claiming the dash and heat races. Larry Davies finished third. Tony Berry of Spokane, the 2005 Rookie of the Year, rounded out the top four after starting on the pole. Multiple Hobby Car winner Brian Husk sliced through a thick field of competition to win the division’s 20-lap main event. Husk was one of five different winners Saturday night as JC Ward, celebrating his 15th year competing at the track, and Gary Hommel snatched dash wins. Ron Collison and Dan Johnston rushed to the lead in heat races to claim their first victories of 2006. In other action, local legend Frank Volz took the vintage Golden Wheel’s Sprint and Midget wins along with Larry Martin, Dan Blair and Greg Triber. The exhibition races featured collector’s cars from the late 40’s and early 50’s. Nine Mile Falls’ Richard Cox set fast time for the Early Stocks out running longtime Stateline Speedway racer and champion crew chief Billy Husk for the heat and main event win. Husk won the dash with Justin Robideaux finishing second. The 2006 season opener for the Inland Northwest Super Stock Series runs this Saturday with returning series champion Kevin Richards of Newman Lake, Washington defending his title. Qualifying starts at 6pm racing at 7:30pm. General admission is $13 for adults, $30 admits a family. Hobby cars and Street Stocks will also be competing. The wild, wacky, unpredictable action of Wednesday Night Fever resumes Wednesday at 6pm with Fever 4’s - Compacts, Road Runners, plus the cars and superstars of the Bump to Pass division. Adults are just $5.75; kids under the age of nine accompanied by adults are free.
